How to Resize an App Icon in 3 Steps
From one master image to every store-ready size, with no design tools and no uploads.
- 1
Upload your master icon
Drop in a PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG. A 1024x1024 master gives the sharpest result at every output size.
- 2
Set padding and background
Add a safe-zone margin so device masks do not clip your glyph, and flatten transparency with a background fill for stores that require opaque icons.
- 3
Pick platforms and download
Choose iOS, Android, web or all eight targets, then download one ZIP with correctly named folders, Contents.json files and manifest snippets.
App Icon Sizes for iOS, Android and Web
Store reviews run on hard numbers before anyone sees your design. Here is what each destination expects, and what this app icon resizer generates from one master.
| Destination | Sizes you ship | Format rules |
|---|---|---|
| App Store (iOS) | 1024x1024 px master | PNG, no alpha, square corners |
| iPhone & iPad home screen | 18 files from 20x20 to 1024x1024 | Xcode derives all sizes from the master since Xcode 14 |
| Android launcher | 48, 72, 96, 144, 192 px mipmap | One PNG per density plus round variants |
| Android adaptive icon | 108x108 dp canvas, 66 dp safe zone | Foreground and background layers; masks vary by device |
| Google Play listing | 512x512 px | 32-bit PNG, no alpha, max 1 MB |
| Web favicon | 16, 32, 48 px in one .ico | Plus individual PNG fallbacks |
| iOS web bookmark | 180x180 px apple-touch-icon | Opaque PNG; iOS adds the corner mask |
| PWA manifest | 192x192 and 512x512 px | PNG; maskable variants recommended |
| Chrome extension | 16, 32, 48, 128 px | PNG entries in Manifest V3 |
| macOS & watchOS | 10 and 17 files per set | AppIcon.appiconset folders with Contents.json |
Sizes follow Apple and Google developer documentation as of 2026. The resizer output matches this table.
How Each Platform Handles Your Icon
Resizing is only half the job. Each platform masks, scales or layers your artwork differently, and knowing the difference explains most rejected uploads.
iOS and iPadOS. Since Xcode 14, Apple asks for a single 1024x1024 master with no transparency and no rounded corners. Xcode generates the 18 appiconset files from it, and the system applies the corner mask at display time, so your artwork stays a full square.
Android. Android 8 and newer draw the launcher icon from an adaptive icon: a background layer and a foreground layer on a 108x108 dp canvas. Device masks range from circles to squircles to rounded squares and can cut anything outside the 66 dp center circle, which is why padding decides whether your logo survives.
Web and PWA. A web app needs favicon sizes for browser tabs, a 180x180 apple-touch-icon for iOS bookmarks, and 192x192 plus 512x512 manifest icons for install prompts. The exported pack includes the site.webmanifest file and the exact HTML head snippet to paste.
Cross-platform frameworks. The ZIP follows the standard android/res/mipmap-* resource layout, so the Android files drop straight into a Flutter or React Native project, and the 1024x1024 master works as the single source for flutter_launcher_icons.
Keep Your App Icon Inside the Safe Zone
Most resize problems come from artwork that fills the whole canvas. Four rules keep the glyph safe at every size.
Pad the glyph, not the canvas
Keep the logo inside roughly the center 80% for iOS and inside the 66 dp circle for adaptive icons. The padding slider previews the margin live.
Never pre-round the corners
iOS, Android and Google Play each apply their own mask when the icon is displayed. Rounded source art shows background-colored gaps at the corners.
Flatten transparency before export
The App Store and Google Play reject icons with an alpha channel. Fill transparency with a solid background color instead of shipping a see-through PNG.
Check the glyph at 48 px
Launcher and favicon sizes sit at 48 px and below. If the mark is unreadable there, simplify it before resizing, not after.

Three Ways to Resize an App Icon
An in-browser resizer, a typical online resizer and manual design-tool exports all solve the same job at different costs.
| This in-browser resizer | Typical online resizer | Design tool exports | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platforms per download | 8 targets incl. watchOS, Windows, Chrome | iOS and Android in most cases | One size per export |
| Your artwork | Stays in the browser | Usually uploaded to a server | Stays on your machine |
| Padding and safe zone | Slider with live mask preview | Basic or none | Manual guides |
| Output structure | Folders, Contents.json, manifest, HTML snippet | ZIP of loose PNGs | Loose exports |
| Favicon .ico encoding | Multi-resolution .ico built in | Sometimes offered | Plugin or script needed |
| Adaptive shape preview | Circle, squircle, teardrop, rounded square | Rarely offered | Not available |
| Cost | Free | Free with limits | App license or subscription |

App Icon Resizer FAQ
Common questions about sizes, formats and rejected uploads.
What size should an app icon be?
Ship a 1024x1024 px PNG for the App Store and a 512x512 px PNG for Google Play. Every other size, from the 20x20 iOS settings icon to the 192x192 Android xxxhdpi launcher icon, is derived from that master by Xcode, Android Studio or this resizer.
How do I resize app icons for iPhone?
Upload your 1024x1024 master to the resizer, keep the artwork inside a small margin, and download the iOS pack. It contains the 18 appiconset files plus the Contents.json Xcode expects, so the folder drops straight into Assets.xcassets. Since Xcode 14, a single 1024x1024 icon is all App Store Connect requires.
How do I make app icons bigger on my home screen?
That setting lives on the phone, not in the artwork. On iOS 18 and later, touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Customize, and switch between Small, Medium and Large. On Android it depends on the launcher: long-press the wallpaper and open Home settings to find icon size. This page covers the artwork developers ship to the stores.
Why does my app icon look cropped on Android?
Android 8 and newer mask every launcher icon from a 108x108 dp adaptive canvas, and the mask shape differs by device: circle, squircle, teardrop or rounded square. Artwork outside the 66 dp center circle gets cut on some devices. Add padding until the glyph sits inside that circle, which is what the padding slider and shape preview in this tool are for.
Does the iOS app icon support a transparent background?
No. App Store Connect requires every pixel to be opaque, and an alpha channel causes upload errors. If your source icon has transparency, pick a solid background fill in the resizer before exporting, and the flattened PNGs will pass validation.
Should I round the corners of my app icon?
No. iOS, Google Play and Android launchers apply their own corner masks when the icon is displayed, and the mask differs across devices and system versions. Pre-rounded artwork shows visible background-colored gaps around the corners. Export a full square and let the system do the rounding.
How do I add the resized icon to my Xcode project?
Unzip the download and drag the ios/AppIcon.appiconset folder into Assets.xcassets in Xcode, replacing the existing set. The included Contents.json already lists every file, so no manual assignment is needed.
Can I use these icons in a Flutter app?
Yes. The android/res/mipmap-* folders in the ZIP follow the standard Android resource layout, so you can copy them into your Flutter project's android folder directly, or feed the 1024x1024 master to flutter_launcher_icons. The iOS side works through the Xcode asset catalog as usual.
